Savusavu, Fiji

Savusavu is a lovely little town on Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second largest island. Savusavu has a very large harbor that is protected by islets and mangroves. The harbor is a favored mooring place for overseas yachts during season, May to October. Savusavu is a safe harbor during cyclone season.

We lightered into town to be greeted by a local band singing and local ladies with Plumeria blossoms for the visitors. A local policeman on duty decided to join the singers.

Fred and I walked around the village and up the hill to the geothermal hot springs. It was too early in the day for anyone to be there cooking. The island is lush and beautiful. The main street is town is maintained with flowering and herbaceous shrubs. The streets are clean, and the properties are tended. Unfortunately, the local water supply and sewer system aren’t adequate, and the harbor reflects this.

Suva, Fiji

Fiji is a South Pacific island group of some 300 islands and atolls spread across 200,000 square miles of sea. The main island is Viti Levu. Suva, the capital of Fiji, is located on a peninsula on the south east corner.

Suva is a large city. Outside Australia or New Zealand, Suva is the largest city in the South Pacific. It looks like the commercial and political center that it is. Skyscrapers, highways, bumper-to-bumper traffic. Even though Suva is surrounded by water, the nearest beaches are about 25 miles away. This is farther than Fred and I felt like walking – in the rain – in the pouring down rain, so we declared a lazy day.
